Yellow House Atelier

“Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.”

-Sir Ken Robinson

Please visit Yellow House Atelier to learn about the innovative and exciting ways our atelier enriches our student’s lives.

Our atelier is the heart of our school and is a central aspect to the Reggio Emilia Approach. The Atelier is the school’s art studio; it is a magical place. A place where we are free to explore, free to create, and free to dream. We do not just speak with our words here. In this room we have an endless amount of materials to use from professional grade paint and watercolors to clay, wire, and potters wheels. Materials to allow our dreams to come true… for our thoughts to become visual. Our schools believe that children communicate in “multiple languages.” Symbolic languages, including drawing, sculpting, dramatic play, writing, and painting are used to represent the children’s thinking processes and theories. Through this process, each child has the opportunity to think, listen, debate, collaborate, invent, and develop confidence. Art is used as an opportunity to express and create ideas, knowledge, feelings, expand on project work, etc. While creating art, children are learning and executing academic skills using higher order thinking and applying concepts of symmetry, fractions, parts of a whole, gravity, and viscosity. The children interpret art which is a powerful way to teach them different perspectives, mood through color, and expand, in general, concrete thinking. We are constantly helping them reach deeper into what could be rather than what is.
